Sponsor & donate guide

Is sponsoring youth softball tax deductible?*

It can be. West Valley Fast Pitch is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so sponsorships and donations may qualify for a tax deduction — either as a charitable contribution or as a business advertising expense, depending on what you receive in return. Here's how it works, in plain language.

Two ways your support may be deductible

How a payment is treated for taxes usually comes down to one question: what does your business get back?

Charitable contribution

When you're simply thanked

A gift to a 501(c)(3) where you receive little or nothing in return — like having your business name or logo listed as a supporter — may qualify as a charitable contribution. If you do receive goods, services, or other benefits, your deductible amount is generally reduced by their value.

At WVFP: Community Supporter donations ($250, $500, $1,000)

Business advertising expense

When your business is promoted

A sponsorship that puts your business in front of local families — a field banner, a jersey logo, a website placement — may qualify as an ordinary business advertising or marketing expense, deducted like other promotion your business pays for.

At WVFP: Featured sponsorships (field, jersey, Snack Shack, and digital)

Many businesses combine both — for example, a field banner plus a Community Supporter gift. Your tax advisor can tell you how each part applies to you.

Giving as an individual?

Individuals can support WVFP too. Historically, deducting a charitable gift has required itemizing. New for the 2026 tax year, the IRS says some people who take the standard deduction may be able to deduct cash gifts to qualified charities — up to $1,000, or $2,000 for married couples filing jointly. Ask your tax advisor whether you qualify.

Donating goods or services

We welcome in-kind gifts like equipment, food, printing, and apparel. Donated goods may be deductible based on their fair market value, subject to IRS rules. The value of your own time or labor generally isn't deductible, though some out-of-pocket costs of volunteering may be. Tell us what you'd like to give and we'll agree on the details in advance.

Your receipt

The IRS requires a written acknowledgment from the charity for any single contribution of $250 or more. Once your payment is received, WVFP sends one showing:

  • Our name and EIN (93-1568983)
  • The amount and date of your payment
  • A description of any recognition or benefits you received in return

Keep it with your tax records — it's the first thing your tax advisor will ask for.

Want it to count for 2026? Give by December 31.*

Sponsorships and donations paid by December 31 may count toward that tax year. Under IRS guidance, a mailed check generally counts on the date it's mailed, and a credit card payment on the date it's charged.

A sponsorship is confirmed once WVFP accepts it in writing and payment is received, so start your inquiry by early December to leave time for approval and payment before the year ends.

Common questions

Is West Valley Fast Pitch a registered charity?

Yes. West Valley Fast Pitch, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, EIN 93-1568983, serving girls softball families in West Valley City and across the west side of the Salt Lake Valley since 1974.

Can I deduct both a sponsorship and a donation?*

Possibly. They're separate payments with different purposes, so a featured sponsorship may qualify as a business expense while a Community Supporter donation may qualify as a charitable contribution. Your tax advisor can confirm how to treat each one.

Does WVFP give tax advice?

No. This guide explains general rules in plain language so you know what to ask. Every business and household is different — please consult your tax advisor before relying on any deduction.
